Trucker Turned ASU Student
My husband, Terry, wanted to make more money than he was. So he got his CDL (commercial driver’s license) in 2012. He has driven all kinds of trucks. Such as, box trucks, 48-footers, 53-footers, rear-end dump trucks, flatbeds, doubles, pneumatics and so on. He has hauled and delivered everything. Examples are refrigerated foods, dry foods, tires, electronics, cars, parts, and even body parts of the dead. Delivering for big companies we all know like, Shamrock Foods and Starbucks. Terry has worked locally and out of town (Tucson, Kingman, Nogales). Even long hauls to Texas, New Mexico and Kentucky, which made him be away from home days at a time. I, myself have experienced some of it. Going with him to make deliveries or pick ups. Trucking is not for everyone. But I loved it.
He made a decent amount of money doing this type of work. He was happy with what he was making every two weeks. Had no complaints. He enjoyed going to all these different places and seeing different areas and states. It kept him healthy and in shape.
Then he got injured. He had a hard time completing his jobs while in pain. This is when he realized he can’t do this type of work for the rest of his life or even at 50 years of age. Any injuries or old age would hinder him from completing his job and therefore affect his pay. Luckily for him, he didn’t put off continuing with school. He completed his Associates Degree in Associates of Arts. Which I’m very proud of him. He went to school even while exhausted and drained. Got through it with determination and I look up to him everyday for it!
In June of 2017, he recieved a letter of acceptance to ASU, to attend the Architectural Program. Talk about an accomplishment!!!!! He has always talked about going to ASU and he has finally done it. He will make more money than he did before and won’t have to exhaust himself in doing so. I’m happy he has achieved so much and will keep doing better for himself. We both see that furthering our education will lessen the stress in our lives. I’m excited for this journey he is on and I’m proud to be by his side while he does it. Education is the key to SUCCESS!!!
